Tiptoeing Into Resolutions

{+ Lesa Jones}

Okay, so I (like countless others) have a list of New Year’s resolutions…many are probably familiar: get healthy, more exercise, more discipline for many work related items, more quality time with my family, new systems for managing finances, etc. But the thing is, the list is actually much more extensive – I just generalized to make it simple. Oh, my list is a bit long.

Like it or not, I have come to realize that I have a tendency to make long lists, and then I later become frustrated because I can’t do it all at once. It’s really a habit I worked hard on breaking over the last year, so it surprised me a bit that the pattern resurfaced as I was trying to plot out new, better habits for 2010.

And, four days into the new year…I find myself already falling behind. I am not 100% on all of my resolutions! Can you believe it?! I mean, the year is underway – can’t I start over?

So instead of beating myself up about it (another positive habit established in 2009), I decided to be okay with tiptoeing into my resolutions.  I actually want these new changes to stick, right? So taking the pressure off myself to do them all NOW, all at once – it’s given me a new start, even on the fourth. Can’t wait to see what the fifth will bring. Maybe I’ll even put a few off to just start next week…

What about you, my dear readers? Do you make New Year’s resolutions? What kind do you make? What do you do when they don’t stick right away? How much time do you give them? I’d love to hear what you do to make them lasting changes.

    his year like every year I have a long list. I also tend to beat myself up for not successfully accomplishing my resolution goals. My main resolutions for this year is to focus on the positive, accept my accomplishments, and not be hard on myself when things don't work out. So in order to help my main resolutions, what I decided to do this year is spread the rest out throughout 2010.

    Although I want to do all of them right now, I know from past experiences that I spread myself to thin, lose focus, and then just give up completely. So I am making 12 official resolutions and assigning a month to each.

    In January my resolution is to be more fit. So I am taking a boot camp class 3 days a week and will go for a run or do the Wii fit at least 2 of the other days....

    I had a baby in August of 2009 so, of COURSE my big resolution is to lose a ton of weight. I was really dreading it this year because I do it every year and I know how painful it is. Not to mention that once summer roles around all I want to do is eat BBQ, drink beer and hang out at the pool which just makes me gain all the weight back. So..this year, 2 sister in laws, my mother in law and I are doing our version of 'The Biggest Loser' We're not going to see each other until late June so the deal is we have to be 10% lighter by then or give up $100 to divide among those who successfully completed the task. It has made it way more fun and gotten me excited about it instead of hating every minute of it.

    Love this blog! Isn't it the truth; we tend to put endless lists everywhere, esp. at the beginning of the New Year. It is a wonderful thing to do, setting goals, but "stepping into" sounds much more comfortable than "diving into", especially for those of us who need just a bit of time to warm up!

    What I have learned is to have a plan, but be open to things changing your course, it may be more more beautiful than the one originally planned ;).
  • I stopped making New Year's Resolutions a few years ago when I realized that they were never accomplished. I do make goals throughout the year but try to keep them short and attainable.
